For anyone familiar with Jackson, a review of the Parlour is wholly unnecessary. The Parlour is what Jackson is known for (along with the prison and the Cascades, I suppose). I moved away from Jackson several years ago, but my family, as well as my brother's family still return to Jackson to go to the Parlour. We spent many celebratory nights at the Parlour. We also spent many more regular evenings and Saturdays there. We went with groups, as a family, and even, whenever the mood struck, alone to grab a huge cone to go. I don't believe my dad ever had a client in town without ending the evening at the Parlour. My experience would probably be repeated by hundreds of others who have lived in Jackson. It really is that good.
As for the ice cream, my favorites are the pecan combo (basically a really amazing turtle sundae), the peanut butter cup sundae, the chocolate malt, and the hot fudge cream puff. If you're brave, try the black cow--a huge root beer float which, if you finish it, you get to keep the mug it came in. And of course, there's the Dare to be Great. A massive sundae of 21 scoops of assorted ice creams, four toppings, nuts, whipped cream, and cherries. It's served in something akin to a salad bowl. Finish it yourself in an hour or less and it's free. Personally, I don't think the consequences are worth the $19.99 you might save, but people try it, none the less.
Besides being a place to get a really great ice cream treat, the Parlour is a tradition. People have come from all over the states...probably even the world, and visited the Parlour. I doubt there are too many people in Jackson who have hosted out-of-town guests without dropping by the Parlour. If you live in Michigan, lucky you--the Parlour is just a short drive away. If you are visiting Jackson from far away, make sure you don't miss the Parlour. If it's summer, try to hit the Cascades, too. But try to avoid the prison.....
