By far the best Chinese restaurant in Lansing. Period. The place is a hole in the wall, but the food is authentic and very high quality. You'll love it.
I am a regular, I have, with very little exception, had a fantastic food experience there. The staff are all friendly, the atmosphere is calm and comfortable.

I used to go to Huapei about 5 years ago and really enjoyed the food there. Being back in town and craving chinese food decided to revisit what should have been a good restaurant.
Sadly, the place has gone downhill. Peeling wallpaper, a big dent in the wall, cardboard covering what may have been an interior window, peeling Duct Tape on the emergency door and air conditioner. If they don't care enough to create a pleasant eating environment what can you expect from the food? I stayed based on the good experiences of yore.
I was seated in a reasonable amount of time, server brought me water & hot tea. Took awhile to come back for my order, Crab Rangoon and Kung Pao Chicken. Took about 10 minutes for my app to come out, and it was served just above room temperature. Took one bite and set it aside. Server never stopped by, no idea where she went. 10 more minutes pass. I eventually see her again (there was only 1 waitress) she took the crab away. They offered to make a new one, but by that time I just wanted my dinner and to get gone. The Chicken dish arrives, the rice is way overcooked and the taste of the chicken dish was just bad. I tried about 5 bites, paid my bill and left. Went home and spent the evening and next day sick with sever food poisoning.
Sad to see what used to be a good restaurant turn into a place that should be avoided at all costs.
For those of us who haven't tried authentic Chinese food, Huapei is a real treat. The ambiance is not particularly special, but the food is delicious and the waitstaff are friendly and helpful.
My girlfriend and I are vegetarians, so we mentioned this to them and they took their soup, normally made with chicken stock, and made a fresh batch with mushroom stock just for us! I cannot recommend them highly enough.
Although the restaurant does no advertising whatsoever (except for word-of-mouth), it enjoys a loyal following of customers (like myself) who have enjoyed meals there for many years. The service is fast and it doesn't take long for them to remember you and what you prefer. The food is authentic and priced very well. My personal favorite is either the Haupei or Szechuwan dish. Make sure to try the pot stickers as an appetizer!
OK, this place isn't for looks. That said, it's a great lunch joint (I haven't tried dinner there). Speedy and priced right. I love the Korean style beef, and their sweet and sour anything is the best around. Not to syrupy or a weird color -- just right. If hot & sour isn't the soup du jour, get it anyway. Very clear broth (no oil), loads of good stuff. The more you go there, the more the staff remembers you and what you order.
Went for lunch with two other co-workers, food was good and hot. Service was decent, the lunch menu was small but the food made up for it. Small, quiet place... comfortable. I would recommend checking it out. I am not an avid chinese/korean eater, and I was very pleased with the meal.
