El Azteco has been a generational favorite of my family. I remember going there with my dad when I was 7 or 8 years old -- 20 years later my husband and I eat there at least a couple of times a month. The food is great and it's served up fast and hot. I always get the Enchiladas de Joquoque (mild), while my husband sticks with the Enchildas de Queso. The cheese dip is great, the nachos are filling and the Topopo salad is so huge and yummy, it's just nuts. I bring out-of-towners to El Az (the local abbreviation) and recommend it to everyone I know.

I love this place to eat. The service is awful but it makes up with great southwestern cuisine.
Try the Topopo salad - it's a real treat.
My favorite item are the burrito's. Green sauce please!!!
Visit the west side location not the east side location for better service. I hope!!!

A legend in East Lansing written by

My husband and I have been going to El Azteco in East Lansing for 20 years (or more). Part of the ambience (when they used to be down in a cellar) was the oddity of the students/young adults that worked there. They were all unique from hairstyles to tattos to unique clothing choices. The food was great though. Now they are located in an above ground location with an upper deck and appear much more main stream. The food is not as good as it used to be but it's still a fun dining experience. The Topopo salad is a mountain. I usually ask for light lettuce as I enjoy more goodies on my salads than to be drowned in lettuce. Their nachos are cheesy and gooey. My husband loves the Chicken Suizas. Their cheese dip appetizer (don't recall what it's called) is very good and unique. I have noticed in the last few years that the food seems to be more milder in flavor but maybe I'm just getting old and my taste-buds are wearing out. Their Sangria and Margaritas will kick your butt so if you are driving, be careful. All in all we still consider this one of our favorite places in the East Lansing area. We really enjoy the upper deck on a summer night.
