Eight of us meet up at Kampai House to celebrate Lynn's birthday. They have done a very great job tranforming the space. The house music also make the ambiance of this restaurant very unique.
We ordered many starters and sushi rolls, and we liked the food very much. Captain Crunch is a dish not to be missed. Jumbo prawn, pumpkin puree, coated with almond chips and deep fried for $9, a very good deal. XO scallop, seared jumbo sweet scallop with spicy XO sauce, absolutely delicious! The famous Fire Dragon Roll lived up it's look and fame. The duck, Dynasty, the flavor from sake and miso makes this dish a class of its own. The traditional Japanese food items like Chirashi Sushi, Katsu Don and Unagi Don were one of the best that we've had and of generous portion.
Our bill came out to be $20 per person. Not bad for great food and some sake. The service was good, and can be better. I for sure will go back to try other dishes.
I will continue to return until I taste all items on the menu! I am always torned between eating at the sushi bar or try another fusion dish.
The quality of the fish here is one of the best in the area. The hamachi is so buttery that it just melts in your mouth. "Kampai Crunch" ($10)is a roll no one should miss - cruncy and full of flavor. The white tuna carparcio (escolar white tuna with honeydew melon)was unbelievable!
The fusion starters and entrees are creative and delicious. My favovite entree is "Kyoto Emerald" (grilled black cod with portabella mushrooms), which also come with Miso soup and salad.
My co-workers like to hang out at Kampai after 9pm for the happy hour. Cool drinks, half-priced appetizers and enjoy the hip atmosphere. No politics zone for us!

As a Japanese, I had no idea when I saw the menu. So I just asked the chef what I want to eat. The executive chef Suzuki is great. He has 22 years experience in Japanese cuisine and sushi both in Tokyo and Osaka. He cooked real Japanese food for us. I bet it`s the best in the whole United States. And you should see how he makes sushi. Besides, the fish is soooooooooooo fresh. I think the price is very reasonable for the quality.

I came to KamPai House to check out a new japanese restaurant and I was pleasantly surprised. When I walked in, I felt like I was in a much closer San Franciscan restaurant. The decor is hip and inviting, and then food is absolutely to die for. I ordered the fire dragon roll and it was the best I've ever had. Business is slow still, so it might be intimidating. It has delicious mixed drinks, i recommend the lychee oren ishii and a happy hour with half priced drinks and appetizers. I will definitely come back for good sushi. Prices are high, but not for the quality. I've come for lunch and the lunch specials are definitely worth it.
Living in Sunnyvale, there are many choices for good Japanese food. This place is not one of them. They don't post the menu on the outside - there is a reason. everything here is overpriced. the green tea is $3.00, and it is the same brand you can buy from Trader Joes. All rolls are on average $10. Desserts are all $9+. So what are you paying for then? Beats me... i guess the fancy menus and the giant LCD over the sushi bar. The food was just ok, but not worth the $50 bill for 4 rolls. My advice:
1. Rokko
2. Seto
3. Azuma
... then go to Trader Joes and buy the tea and chocolate cake.
