Having moved here from the Bay Area I was board with the local chain restaurants and was so surprised to find Five Restaurant. We had a wonderful time and a fabulous meal! The Tuscan Nachos are delicious, the Wedge Salad is rockin and the Pasta melts in your mouth.

Great find and would say give it a try.

Funny thing is that the reviews are pretty harsh....almost harsh enough to think they might be other restaurants? .....food for thought.

Give it a try - oh and we went on a Thursday night. There was live music when we were there.

The food is cold and the beer is warm. Save yourself some money DON’T EAT HERE! Not to mention they cram you into the place like sardines. When I brought it up to the serve, she made it sound as if I was lucky to even have gotten a table.

I went here about two nights ago with my family. I expected Five to have a nice, relaxing type of atmosphere but it was actually quite opposite. All the tables are close together and near the bar. It was EXTREMELY loud and chaotic...to the point where I couldn't hear what my waiter was saying to me. You DON'T want to go here if your planning a romantic/relaxing dinner with someone. Keep in mind that I went in the middle of the week, too. So Friday/Saturday night is 10 times worse.

Probably one of the most annoying dinning experiences ever.

As far as food goes, it was okay. Nothing special and a bit overpriced.

The owners of this restaurant do not concern themselves with such things as customer service AT ALL. I've eaten at Five a handful of times, with the food ranging from mediocre to awful and the service consistently awful.

The Christmas Party I attended at Five recently was the last straw. They booked us on the patio and told us they would have heaters and assured us we would be comfortable. At the last minute, they said we would be too cold and moved us into the banquet room with the exception of one table since we couldn't all fit in the banquet room. They again assured us that the table outside would be surrounded by 5 heaters and we would be very comfortable; toasty even. When we got there, there were only 3 heaters outside, and one ran out of propane before we were served our salads. We asked the waitress if we could have the propane tank replaced. She responded curtly that it wasn't her job, but she would check with Pat. She returned to let us know they were out of propane. She also told us that Pat said that since we got such a good deal on the food, we really shouldn't be complaining. First of all, what happened to 'the customer is always right'? Obviously these people aren't concerned with getting repeat business.

I was also confused by the concept itself. Never before have I been told that I didn't pay enough money for my meal so I didn't deserve to be warm. What country are we living in?? Anhd third, we did in fact pay MORE than enough for our meal. It's not like they didn't make a profit on us.

Eventually a different server came by and replaced the propane after we asked him about it (so obviously they weren't out).

With so many good restaurants closing in Fresno, it is amazing to me that Five is still in business.

On to the food. My husband ordered chicken rigatoni. It came with NO chicken whatsoever and approximately 6 rigatoni noodles. This was supposed to be a main course. I ordered the lasagna which was ALMOST as good as Stouffer's.

    My advice: eat elsewhere.

Never had a good experience here. Food is just okay - overpriced and small portions. Service is slow and staff is rude (consistently, shockingly so). Management acts like they're doing YOU a favor by letting you eat at their restaurant. (Wonder how much longer that attitude will survive in this economy...)

You're better off across the street at Campagnia.

Five is a wonderful restaurant! My husband and I were very pleased with the staff and the owner was very warm and welcoming. The setting was perfect and you have the option of eating outside on the patio. The waiters were very polite and attentive and the food was excellent!

I heard about FIVE being a great place to take my wife for a nice, romantic dinner. The hostess was very friendly, but the staff seemed out of control. Pat has a good reputation in Fresno (I don't know him personally), but I didn't feel welcome. The waiting staff were loud and made my wife feel very uncomfortable, will not go back. Too bad, nice place.

Well I have been to 5 a total of 3 times now and I will not be going back. I called to make reservations and spoke with Pat the Owner. I explained that we were having a little girls lunch on X-Mas Eve before going to our families for dinner. We were just going to have the Chocolate Fondue and to please have the home made marshmallows. We ended up having a little snack also of pizza and salad they were very good. The fondue on the other hand left much to be desired. The chocolate was not even hot, there was no candle in the holder to keep it hot, the bowl for the fondue was not even the correct bowl to go with the fondue set, there were no homemade marshmallows. The Fondue is $14 that is a little expensive for what we got. There are only a few days a year that a restaurant should get it right, Mother's Day, Valentine's Day and the X-Mas Season they failed miserably. Very disappointed.

I have know Pat and Paul La Rocca for many years. Their restaurant, which bears their name, was always good food with good service. Unfortunately this is seemsis not the case at 5. Lasteventing mywife and I went to enjoy our regular Friday night dinner. We arrived at 5:30 and after being seated were greated by Pat (owner) at our table. Our servercame took our order and then we NEVER saw him butonce again. 5 other groups arrived and were seated much after we were. Seems one table seemed to be of more interest to our server than our un filled drink glasses or the fact that it took 45 minutes to get our salad. And only after I waved Pat down pointing out that FIVE tables have received not only their salads but their meals and we had not did SUDDENLY we have our food. Pat never returned to see if everything was ok which I thought odd since we had to get his attention to receive our food. The food was good except I had risotto(sp)which should have been on the appetiser list as the portion was a joke. I thought since we knew Pat he would come by again in light of having to get him for our food but he did not. All told it took 1 and half hours to getour food. At 5:30 on a Friday I feel that is unacceptable. Pat discussed he was having some peaks and valleys with business, I can see why. Maybe the trendier people command more attention from the staff. I suggest going to the old La Roccas if you want good service and good food

I came into FIVE restaurant about a 3 days ago for me and my husbands aniversary and I could not ask for a better dinning experience. First of all the Restaurant interior is so beautiful and the mood is set with a candle and dim lights. We got a bottle of wine the server suggested (CakeBread Cab) and it was Phenomenal. For an app. we had Crab cakes, for salds i had the cranberry and apple salad and my husband had the panzanella salad, and for our entree we had a This Ribeye special and Lobster Ravioli's. All three were to die for. At the end of our meal we tried the bittersweet chocolate fondue and i have to say i have never had a more delicious desert. To top it all off we had the best server that had ever waited on me "Scotty". So funny and knew how to sell me on something. He was always there almost the exact moment i needed something and definatly made the experience that much more enjoyable. Me and my husband have both decided to make that place a regular dinning spot. Over all Five restaurant is fantastic!!

    Dissipointed

This is not a fine dining restaurant. There are only about 6 complete booths, every thing else is tables and chairs. There are no table clothes on any of the tables. The tables are wood with a good amount of polyurethane on them…very slick. As your plates get lighter from eating the food from them, they tend to slide around on the table and you have to kind of chase them around. The tables are set with only the napkin, 1 knife, and 1 fork there is also a plate for the bread.

They bring out some bread and olive tapenade which did not have to much flavor. You had to use your only knife to spread it.

There were 2 of us and we ordered 1 glass of wine a piece (about $ 13.50 total). We both ordered a salad (about $ 16.00 total). My salad was not too tasty. Needed more dressing. It was a tomato, cheese and prochuto salad. My wife had the wedge salad. There were about 3 lettuce wedges with some dressing over some of them. She did not finish hers because she said there was not enough dressing.

I ordered a pea/prochuto/pasta dish in a light tomato cream sauce. It was $16.00 and very tasty and a large portion for the price. I did wonder if the peas were fresh or from a can. My wife ordered the Ahi tuna (about $34.00). That was served on a bed of mixed greens and also was very tasty.

We order 1 desert to split between us. We were told it takes about 8-9 minutes to make. It took every bit of that time and was served warm. It was a round (like a small hockey puck) dark chocolate cake with warm dark chocolate pudding in the middle. On the other side of this plate was a very small scoop of mocha ice cream. I was disappointed with the cake part only because you can get the same thing every day at Hometown Buffet. You can also make this yourself from a box at the supermarket.

The total bill came out to about $92.00 without tip.

The overall experience on a scale of 1-10 was a 5 ½. Maybe that’s why they decided to name it “5”.

    OSSO BUCCO FROM HELL

FIVE claims to be an Italian restaurant. The first strike was it's appetizer selection. I believe that the restaurants quality is best demonstrated by the worst appetizer on the menu. Why then an Italian restaurant would have Nachos and Korean BBQ on their appetizer menu baffles me. Strike two came at the wine presentation. We ordered a bottle of pinot grigio and asking our waiter for his opinion of as to which was more interesting he noted that he'd get the one from Italy just because it's from Italy. Not the wine connosieur obviously. As for the presentation of the wine, it was held under his armpit, literally, while waiting for my dinner date to sample the wine before pouring - pouring was sloppy and all over our table and the bottle was left to warm on the dinner table - no ice bucket to preserve it's flavor. That was strike two. Strike three was the most offensive: A moth the size of New Jersey was in my companion's salad. She held back to not hurl. And graciously enough permitted the hostess to comp our entire meal for the "indiscretion". Disgusting. Yes mistakes happen at restaurants but not when you're paying about $75 a head for a meal. The only other thing worse would have been if a rat jumped out of it and bit her. Just disgusting. Strike four was my meal, the venerable Osso Bucco. This meal of veal is supposed to be tender and as described by our waiter the meat should fall off the bone. THERE WAS NO MEAT - IT WAS ALL BONE. And what meat there was, was so hard and stubborn to pluck away from the bone it made the entire entree a complete wreck. My plate was full of bone and cartiledge. Nothing else. Strike five was my companions fillet mignon: ordered medium, came out charcoal. What a waste of good meat. Sadly, that was the least of the offensive things that happened. Here's a good note to end on.. their fondue desert and creme brulee were excellent. So if you must go to this restaurant, eat beforehand, join your friends late for some muscato and some desert. dining in fresno is so mediocre. and Five is nothing but a testament to that reality.

Four of us had dinner there on a Friday night - the young people were busy in the bar area - but the dining area is separated so that their noise did not bother us. Our waiter was excellent, the food divine - and we were very impressed by the manager, Nick Yovino Jr. who showed us a wonderful wine list to choose from. All in all, it was a classy evening and we will be back again.

Five is an excellent place for lunch or dinner. Their olive dip and bread is to die for. Another praiseworthy item on the menu is the chocolate lava cake. The entrees are well-prepared and the servers very attentive. The restaurant has a warm and welcoming ambience. We were impressed. Thank you.

It sounds like the person who wrote the last review has a personal issue with the restaurant, which altered his perception of the actual food quality and service.
Some personal recommendations are the Rack of Lamb, Seasame Crusted Ahi, Linguini Fruti de Mare, and my favorite rissoto if they have it is, Blue crab meat, blackened prawns, peas, mushrooms in a spicy Jalepino sauce. I've lived in Italy and know how food is prepared there and the guy before is right FIVE does not taste exactly like the Italian way of doing things. Thats not their thing, just read the headline of the restaurant "CALIFORNIA TUSCAN CUISINE" they put their own flair and character in everything.
As far as price goes, you can get a pizza for 10 bucks a pasta from 16 and the meats go from 28-42 so there is a good range for you to make what you want out of your evening.

FOOD WAS COLD, BROUGHT THE WRONG PLATES FROM THE KITCHEN.

FOOD IS OVERPRICED COMPARED TO THE COMPETITION ACROSS THE

STREET AT CAMPAGNIA. SOUP HAD NO TASTE. RISSOTO WAS AN

APPETIZER PORTION, COLD, AND TASTELESS ESPECIALLY COMPARED TO
RISSOTO EATEN IN ITALY. CAESAR SALAD WAS A JOKE, DRESSING WHAT LITTLE THERE WAS HAD NO TASTE. THE FAMILY RESTARAUNT LA ROCCAS IS MUCH BETTER WITH THE BROTHER OPERATING IT.
