The sushi is good but no better than a lot of places around here and priced roughly the same if not a little higher. I have eaten here a few times and have never had an issue while actually being in the restaurant but carry out was a whole other experience. I don't even know how it could possibly have taken as long as it did but to get a couple of rolls to go it was a 30+ minute experience and there was nobody in the restaurant so it is not like they were busy. I suspect that the hostess who took my order forgot to give it to the cook until I went to check on it because it was still 10 minutes after that. The part that made me mad though was that it was the manager who handed it to me with no apology. I did not even know he was the manager since he had the waiters apron on until I complained to the hostess on the way out. I will eat here again but will never do carryout again. If you just want carryout I recommend Ninja Sushi at 14 Mile and Farmington. They know how to treat people. The first time I went there they gave me hand roll to snack on while I waited before I even put my order in. Sushi House just south of 9 Mile on Farmington is excellent and good prices. Samurai at 14 and Haggerty is not bad either and makes a good date place plus they have the habachi.
I went here for a birthday dinner for one of my friends. There were about 9 or 10 of us, which not only meant they were about to make some considerable money in food sales, but a respectable tip as well.
Here's the thing: my friends and I are all in our young 20's, and some of us look rather young for our age, but I don't think anyone would guess us as under 17 or 18 years old.
The host at the front (who appeared to be the owner of the place) asked us how old we were before we were seated, and asked if we were all over the age of 18. We were a bit taken back by this, as it was only about 5 or 6 PM in the evening (no connection to alcohol/bar rules they may have), and he even went as far as asking if we had our ID's on us.
We finally sat down, and decided it wasn't enough to ruin our meal, and just to let it go. However, he continued to stand attentive from a distance with his hands behind his, watching us throughout our entire meal as if he was waiting for us to run out of the place without paying or break one of their dishes.
It made for an extremely awkward and uncomfortable meal.
The meal went fine, and the food tasted incredible. A lot of care and percision goes into this food. Afterwards, we tipped generously, probably too generous just to prove him wrong.
Look, the food was more than great, but the overall lack of respect from the staff was uncalled for. But not as uncalled for as the futuristic ambient techno music they play while you eat. Because future music = upscale rich people?
We have our monthly date night at Godaiko. We love the sushi but the other dishes are fantastic too. It's well worth the price and the service is always excellent. I recommend sitting at the sushi bar for a change and to watch them prepare the weird dishes we are too chicken to order. Best Japanese food around!
Along with watching a movie a Emagine this has become my new favorite place at fountain walk. The atmosphere is quiet and discreet (unlike BW2 around the corner) and the staff friendly. Their menu is very diverse with something even for non-sushi diners. Emagine and Godaiko have become routine for me, although instead of dinner and a movie, for me it's a movie then dinner! BTW, Emagine has the some really nice cocktails. The Bahama Mama is highly recommended!
We've eaten here numerous times and have had take-out at least four times. We typically get sushi, but sometimes stray into other dishes. The food is always good. The atmosphere is pleasant and the dining area is not too loud. In fact, I'm surprised that more people haven't discovered this restaurant. I definitely recommend it.
My husband and I have been regulars at Godaiko for 3 years. When we go to a movie at Emagine, we eat at Godaiko. We have never had bad food or service. I am shocked that another reviewer did, because that is not indicative of this place. The bar is stocked with great wines and unusual scotches. The spicey ahi tuna as an appetizer is to die for. When Bamboo Club next door is overcrowded and loud, Godaiko always has tables available and you can hear yourself in a good conversation. They accomodate smokers in a separate room with a big screen tv. The staff is second to none. You won't regret eating here.
We went to this awful place because we were going to a movie at the foutainwalk... what a terrible mistake.. The server was rude and very unprofessional .. our food took forever (over an hour 15 mins) even though we only ordered noodle bowls and some tempura veggies... We were upset and talked to the manager who immediatly brought out our food. no apology just dropped the food and walked away... i think she was busy filling water glasses. this place MAKES SURE your water glass is always filled. WOW .. try doing something else.. I felt like walking out throughout the entire meal and regret that i didnt .. when we finally left the manager turned her back as we walked out... give me a break,.,, avoid this place like the plague .. but dont worry im sure it will close soon..
I have eaten at Godaiko on at least ten occasions over the last 6 months. Even my 5 year old daughter talks about how good the food is and how much she loves to go there. Both the sushi bar and the restaurant proper offer incredible food and fun. The cost is very reasonable for what you get. A couple can enjoy two fine dinners with a bottle of good wine for under $60. Godaiko offers Japanese food fresh and friendly which is what I always want in a restaurant. I hope you enjoy your visit as much as I have enjoyed all of mine.
