Restaurant Reviews of Schuler's Restaurant & Pub
Overpriced & very disappointing written by

I first learned of this restaurant from a friend who had eaten there in the 1970s and still remembered his wonderful experience. He had an old AAA guide from 1975 or so that listed Schuler's as "one of the best restaurants in the country." With an endorsement like that, how could I not give it a try at the next available opportunity? It's about an hour from my family's home in East Lansing.
Well, I don't know if Schuler's has gotten worse or all the other restaurants have gotten better, but I found the experience seriously underwhelming. My steak was mediocre (lacking taste and good texture), as were the seafood dishes that others in my party ordered. This despite costing $25 - $30 per entree. At those prices, even in NYC, the food should be noticeably excellent and probably interesting as well. It simply wasn't either. And the decor, though interesting (various quotes written on the ceiling beams) somehow lent the place a kind of overprocessed corporate / country club look.
In the end, we decided we would have been better off going to a local place like Dusty's Cellar in Okemos, and I suspect most decent-sized areas in Michigan have better local options than this.
