anyone who hating on the golden wok is out of their mind! most flavorful and authentic chinese food i've ever had, cooked and enjoyed by actual chinese people!
Golden Wok has the best Chinese food in mid-Michigan. Make sure to ask for the "authentic" menu, or even better, ask the owners, Jenny or Denny, to recommend food for you. They can (and do) make Chinese-American food, but they can also make authentic style Hong Kong food. Steamed fish, roast duck, fresh vegetables, etc. Golden Wok has a separate Dim Sum chef and serves a large valume of dim sum with carts on weekends. Dim Sum is also available off a menu during the week.
The food was simply awful, my husband became ill after eating there. The bathroom is filthy. We could not eat most of what they brought -- poor quality meat (if it was meat). I ordered orange shrimp which had only very tiny and stringy shrimp and lots and lots of disgusting breading. Cheap ingrediants. Stay away at all cost!
My husband and I eat here regularly, and the food is always good. You also can't beat the lunch prices. It' so cheap, and the servings are big. I love the Mongolian Beef, and my husband usually gets the shrimp dishes (his favorite though is Rainbow Shrimp). We also like the salt and pepper shrimp and the Hong Kong Style Crispy Chicken (we dip this in soy sauce with some chili in it, yum!). Great place to go even with large groups of people because then you can each order a dish and share.
I don't know what they do to their food, but it tastes like plastic was mixed in the wok. The food had a burned plastic flavor, not very pleasant.
I asked for my money back but they would not do it. Instead they gave me a free drink. Idiots.
Avoid that place at all cost. It is disgusting and the people are not very friendly.
I've been to Golden Wok several times and it is always sooo good. It is nice because they have really good vegetarian choices- hunan tofu = yum! Their spring rolls are amazing too :) I know this is different than the regular Americanized Chinese, but I think its great to experience REAL Chinese food (you know its real and good Chinese food when its always full of Chinese customers!). Maybe I just got lucky, but my service was amazingly fast! The tea was at the table a second after we sat down, the soup a minute afterwards, and the entrees came between five and ten minutes! My server was friendly, although her English was not that super. Definitely recommended :)
I can not tolerate MSG and this place does not use it- believe me, I would know if they did. I have eaten at the Golden Wok several times. The quality is consistantly good. Dinner portions are large so if you like leftovers you will be pleased. My favorite entrees include the generals chicken, orange beef, shrimp with walnut, and the beef lo mein. The hot and sour soup is much spicier than most so be for-warned. The men's room is clean but smells terrible due to the fact that they dump moth balls into the urinal. Aside from that I would say that this is the best value in decent Chinese food in the area.
Dim sum from the push carts on weekends and special holidays: Shrimp bonnets (har gow), pork dumplings (siu mai), bbq pork buns (cha siu bao) chinese sausage buns (lop cheung bao), chinese tamale (nor mi gai), spare ribs in black bean sauce (dow see pai quat), bbq duck (fo op), chinese broccoli (gai lon), chicken feet (fung jow), beef tripe (ngau chap), red tea (po li cha), plus for dessert, egg custard tarts (don ta) and sesame balls (jeen duey). Good food and service as expected and hoping for a return visit to try other choices on the menu. Reminds me of some of my favorite dim sum joints in San Francisco, Toronto, NYC, and Hong Kong.

We usually go for lunch. This is an excellent value as two can get soup, an entree with rice or noodles and tea as well as a fortune cookie for under $10.00!!!
We have taken friends there for dinner, too, and, while the price was nearly double the cost of lunch, we all ate well and had some to take home for later.
We eat here about every two weeks and always enjoy it.

This place serves authentic chinese food in a tradionally chinese noisy and lively atmosphere. Don't come in expecting your run-of-the-mill Americanized-Chinese food. It's great food, good atmosphere, and good service--if you know what to expect and especially if you speak Chinese.

I stopped by Golden Wok for lunch one day, always willing to try a new place. I ordered what is usually a safe bet at a Chinese restaurant, Egg Foo Young, and what came out of the kitchen was unrecognizable as the dish I have enjoyed for several years at countless Chinese places. The eggs were mixed with some odd substance (flour, gum?) resulting in a strangely chewy texture--not at all pleasant. The sauce was off-tasting, with no redeeming value--and the rice was shinily sticky and gummy--almost like sushi rice, but not as tasty. Just bizarre. I also tried a few dim sum selections, and they were equally bad--a sparerib with more gristle than meat, and a bun of some sort with no filling, taste or texture--leaden and unsatisfying.
I will be amazed if this place makes it for another couple months. Go anywhere else--you'll be glad you did.

the food is good for all occasions in dining, but the service, isn't the best to look forward to. they are slow, don't speak english and half the time don't understand what it is that you want. the food takes forever to come out and it takes a long time to be able to wave down the server for extra water or napkins. but the food isn't all too shabby if you like chinese.
