This restaurant is just plain gross. Way too expensive considering they are serving deep fried (fast)seafood. The place is cute and kitchy, but the food was really subpar. I'm upset with myself that I didn't ask for my money back at the time. Would never, ever set foot in the door again!

Love the all you can eat crab legs written by jlb121870

I was in Franks this past weekend and had the all you can eat crab legs. I thought they were awesome. They don't give you a lot at a time but I never once had to wait for another order. The service was excellent. The ambiance was kind of a dive but some of the best food is found in small hard to find places. I would definitely go back for the crab legs. I was talking to the waitress and she said it was under new management so maybe things are looking up for Franks. I loved this place as a kid and hope to see it continue.

We used to go to Franks Tavern quite a bit growing up and I've been twice in the past year. The first time was horrible but we decided to go back just in case that had been a bad night.
It was horrendous. We waited over an hour for our food. The fish and shrimp was clearly frozen. The oil they fry in was either old or rancid. Everything was cold and dripping in grease.
No wonder we got a seat right away. My daycare provider told me that Franks has hit rock bottom and it's well know around town to stay away from the place.
Disgusting and overpriced.

My wife and I went to Franks to celibrate Father's day for myself a day early with just the two of us. We've been to Franks a few times and always loved the food. This was not the case today. We had crab cakes as an appetizer and it tasted like it was made out of canned salmon or something, it was terrible. Then our scallops came and they tasted like the grease they were fixed in was burned or old or both. The curly fries which were probably cooked in different grease were good. After that meal I think that crab legs might be the only thing safe to eat.

6:30 party starts arriving...
We request a table for 10...note that this includes 3 children

The place hasn't changed a bit
The smells are identical to those of my youth
My mouth is watering for some exceptional fish and chips...or maybe the frog legs...or scallops...oh and that unique spaghetti sauce is always a delight.

6:55 seated...well pseudo seated...1/2 the party has less room than a row of seats in the Super Duper Economy Section [Row ZZZ] of a Boeing 747 offered by TWA....( that's Tight Wad Air)

7:00 Drink orders are taken

7:05 Food orders are taken...
"I'll take the Haddock w/ chips and coleslaw please", I state with heightened enthusiasm.
"I'm sorry we're all out of Haddock", our waitress replies.
Slightly saddened, I reply 'then make it the Cod please".
"I'm sorry sir, we're all out of Cod too", she answers.

Hmmmm...Friday Night
Fenton....a fairly High Catholic/Christian community
A restaurant famous for fish ....
.... and there is no fish
I think my heart skipped a beat

"But we have someone on their way right now to get some more fish....it will take 20 minutes" our server informs us.
My heart resumes....A consensus shows that we're willing to wait....we place our orders.

7:15 fish is not here

7:25 fish is still not here

7:30 fish has arrived...however its frozen...it will take at least another 30 minutes to thaw...
Crap. This couldn't have been brought up sooner?
Those of us that ordered fish change our orders.
"Ok I'll take the seafood platter..."

7:45 no food yet....kids are starving

8:00 still no food yet....kids are starving and whining...tempers are rising
we get the calculated "your order should be up momentarily"
I think that some of the men in the party actually grew beard stubble since we've arrived

8:15 STILL NO FOOD YET!!!!....I'm starving....the rest of the party is starving....tempers are raging
"these drinks are on the house...I apologize for the delay"
followed by the anticipated "....your food should be out any minute"
Well maybe this free beer will calm me down....

....it didn't:
8:30 we inform waitress we would like our bill....
we can no longer wait anymore....
she informs us that they are plating up the meals.
1/2 our party needs to leave so they take their meals to go.
the other 1/2 decides to stay.

I inhale my food....near perfection

8:50something
Don't know what time it is exactly....I'm dazed and confused...
....not sure if I'm totally ticked off from the wait or totally in ecstasy from the meal.

9:00
ITS WHAT TIME????...Nope I'm ticked off.....we depart Franks for the last time

Ambience: 2 - Hey its Franks.....
...hasn't changed since I went there the first time [1972ish? @ 10 years old]
...I think I even recognize some of the original waitresses

Service: -9999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999.......
.... does even the wonderful Federal Government have a super computer large enough to hold this negative number???

Overall - Never Ever Again.....

Franks is Wonderful written by scaryjim

One cannot find better fried scallops anywhere. They simply don't exist. I'm sorry that others recently have had disappointing experiences at Franks, as I never have. Franks reminds me of some forgotten place in Maine that time never has and never will touch. Eat in the rough right here in central Michigan.

If you like grease and a building that is falling apart then you will like this place. Fried fish was good but nothing to write home about. And the bottom line is way to high for the quality of food and ambiance. Don't bother looking for this place as you will likely get lost.

Excellent Seafood written by rshrew01

The seafood was the best I have ever eaten. The shrimp and ribs were incredible and my husband loved the all you can eat crab legs. The service was good and the atmosphere very quaint. I heard they opened another restaurant and we are anxious to try that one in Howell. I would definitely return.

The fish baked and fried to perfection and the people that come there make the whole dining experience even better. The waiting staff is very friendly. This is the place you want to take your whole family to. I been going to this place for ten years and the food taste better everytime I go.
