I have eaten here only a handful of times thus far and have yet to be disappointed. I especially like their chicken mole, particularly because they do it right! Few places even offer this on the menu and those that have usually fail. Their rice is also noteworthy, again mainly because rice at so many Mexican restaurants is "just there." This to me is very authentic, using my Aunt and Grandmother's cooking as a reference.
Their outdoor courtyard is very pretty when the weather is right. Otherwise their indoor dining is pretty much on par with other restaurants - neither good nor bad.
From a service perspective, I will say that the host/hostess have typically been in need of improvement. They are either on the phone or slow to greet you. But the wait staff I have experienced have been great.
I plan to go here again and again and broaden my menu sampling - IF I can remember it. When it comes time to eat, I rarely think of heading to the downtown area. That should change with all the activity in the downtown area.
Waited 25 min for a seat. Then ordered our food. Chips and salsa were brought. Refill on ice water and waiter appeared to tell us that it would 30-35 min to get our food due to fact they were very busy. Sorry!!! Get in extra help on nights that are known to be busy. 35 min to get enchilladas is NOT acceptable. So far have shared our story.
El Zocalo has the best tasting food and drinks of any Mexican restaurant in the valley. The shrimp appetizer, shrimp tacos, Zocalo soup and Zocalo salad are among my favorites. I highly recommend this restaurant. In fact we like it so much we are getting married in their courtyard garden.
