Old Mill House of Pancakes
2005 Richmond Rd
Williamsberg, Virginia
Rates a ZERO Minus in customer relations
While visiting Williamsburg from Arizona with another couple, our dining experiences during the week in this lovely area were at least "good" and many times fell into the "exceptional" category.
Then we had the misfortune to stop in for breakfast at Old Mill House of Pancakes, 2005 Richmond Road in Willamsberg.
This was not a difficult order. The four of us had either pancakes or eggs and sausage and coffee. We certainly weren't expecting anything more than a coffeehouse experience on the level of a Denny's---clean, decent food and hospitable service
What we found instead was insolence, pettiness and a new take on the tried and true business motto: The customer is always right. At Old Mill House of Pancakes they have a different take: The customer is always wrong.
My breakfast order came with biscuits. I asked for some honey. The server told me that they had no honey. I pointed out that the Yogurt, Fruit and Granola was described on the menu as "drizzled with honey."
Still the server courteously explained that he was unable to provide honey. When we requested honey while speaking to the dark-haired, middle-aged female manager she rudely informed us that it "was not tradition" for them to serve us the requested honey. Initially, she said there was no honey to be served. When reminded that the menu listed honey on one dish, she became hostile. I wish I had been quicker on the uptake. I would have liked to have ordered the Yogurt, Fruit and Granola Drizzled with Honey and asked to have the cook "hold" the first three ingredients.
I don't know if this woman is the owner or hired help. If she is hired, she needs to be given some training in dealing with the public. If she is the owner, she might consider a business where interacting with the public is not a requirement. When my husband attempted to pay with American Express, she snarled that they don't accept that card. When he provided another credit card, she reprimanded him not to "toss it on the counter!"
With so many breakfast establishments in the area, there is no reason for diners to subject themselves to such petty and rude behavior. Old Mill House of Pancakes is ddefinitely a place to avoid.

Since it is partnered with the hotel All in all, the Old Mill served some rather unsavory breakfast...
