Four of us ate at Soul City Supper Club, and all had wonderful food. The service was slow, even though we were one of two tables (initially) in the place. We had to endure the sound check of the evening's band "Kighttrain" which was quite annoying, but once they got playing they were good.
We had 3 plates of Fried Chicken, and I had Smothered Chicken. All were outstanding. The breading on the fried chicken had the perfect amount of Southern spice. The smothered chicken had incredible flavor on it's own, and then the sauce over the top was almost too good to describe. The sweet potatoes are just as I like them, the dirty rice was a bit bland, the Mac and Cheese was pretty good (but I've had better at the old Big "E's". The sucatash was decent, and the collard greens were something to avoid. The spicy potato wedges were indeed spicy, and the fries were unspectacular, but not bad. Our orders all had the wrong side dishes on each plate. We got all the right dishes, just not matched with the right entree's. It took a long time to get drink refills, and then you had to ask as they weren't watching to see if you needed more. This worsened as more tables showed up. We arrived at 6:30 and left at 7:20 about to burst our belts.
The atmosphere is not very good. No ambiance. The large wall between the dance floor and the dining area only serves to block your view of the band. The tables were spartan, and one of our four silverware sets had some dirty silver. Decorations are minimal, and if you go back near the bathrooms it appears they are remodeling or something, and the bathrooms were not all that clean or nice. The staff was friendly, and the band was good, though too loud to allow conversation.
The food exceeded expectations, and my expectations were high. The rest fell short of expectations, but I go there for the food and the food alone. Good soul food.
Eric "Big E" is apparently no longer the proprietor. We asked, and they didn't explain but said he's no longer the owner. Big E was always nice and cooked/smoked some mean meats. We miss you E, but the food was still good.
