Restaurant Reviews
Best sushi in town! written by

The sushi is not only the best in the area, it's very reasonably priced! If you're not into sushi, you can select from a variety of other dishes that are prepared fast and are full of flavor. Unlike other "Japanese" restaurants in the area, Akagi's head chef is Japanese and takes great care to instill culinary authenticity with each meal. My personal favorite: Teriyaki Chicken Set, California Rolls, Salmon sushi, and edamame. Lots of parking available.

I go to this restaurant frequently because 1. I love sushi (and their sushi is the best in the area, and 2. the service is amazingly friendly. I have never seen these people without smiles on their faces.
I consider myself a very critical sushi eater. The sushi here is fantastic, and I have tried all of the other sushi restaurants in the area. Try it.

Akagi is one tough restaurant to run into, even if you live in the area. Although it's right beside Walmart, it's stuck in a strip mall that most people never look at, so many don't even know a Sushi restaurant exists there. It's a very small place, with only 5 tables, so it definitely is a neighborhood sushi restaurant. Don't expect a fancy restaurant with expensive decorations.
However, the food is always good, sushi is extremely fresh, and the whole staff is always very friendly. When not eating Sushi, the remaining menu is good as well; we particularly love the Tempura Udon here. The only item I would complain about is their seaweed salad, which isn't the usual seaweed salad you find in Sushi restaurants, but one that tastes more like a mixed greens salad with ginger dressing.

This was my first time at Akagi. I went with a friend of mine for a quick bite of Sushi before a movie. The ambiance was not what I expected for an “Okemos” Sushi house. It was clean but took a minimalist approach to its decor. Plain tables and restaurant supply house chairs and much smaller than I expected.
We were greeted with an enthusiastic “hello” from the Sushi chef and were seated promptly. We ordered a Rainbow Roll, Spicy Tuna Roll, Mackerel, Tuna and Salmon. One thing I have to say is that the Sushi chef is FAST!!!! The Tuna, Mackerel and Salmon came out first. By the time we were done with that the rolls came out. The Mackerel was very good (some places it tends to be dry but theirs was very moist). Both of the rolls were very good but I think the spicy tuna roll had a little too much sesame oil in it
The waitress was very attentive and made sure we didn’t run out of beer. In all it was a great experience. The restaurant gives you a real “mom and pop” feeling. If your in Okemos give it and try, I recommend it.

My husband and I took our 6 year old son with us to Akagi. The menu was somewhat limited but had all the standards.
Our son had the grilled salmon set, ($8.25) and ate almost all of it. He was adventurous and tried everything. He really liked the edamame and the grilled salmon.
I had the unagi donburi set, ($10.50) and a california roll ($4.00). There was lots of eel in sauce, and it was hot and firm. The california roll was about as good as you can get. The miso soup was hot and chock full of tofu bits and seaweed, Yum! The salads were so-so, but who goes for the salad? Our son did not like the pasta salad, but I did.
My husband had an exceptional spicy scallop hand roll ($3.95), which was not too spicy to enjoy, and the Akagi combo (regularly $14.00 but was $13.00 when we had it on Sunday night). The tempura was a little heavy on the shrimp, but that was the only negative comment he had about the whole meal.
For dessert my son and I had the green tea ice cream, and my husband had the ginger ice cream, on recommendation of the waitress (who spoke terrific english). Our son decided he liked the ginger better, so we swapped.
Our family of 3 ate for $60.00, including tip, and walked out happy. Note that neither my son nor I ate anything raw, so it's ok to bring your uninitiated friends :).
The dining room was very small but not crowded. As we walked in and out we were greeted by the chefs ensconced behind a glass wall, and we could see into the kitchen.
Overall, a great experience. We will definitely go back.

Excellent, reasonably priced food in a small restaurant.
The sushi I had there was fresh and tasted great, but I usually come here for their Teriyaki Chicken or Curry Chicken, both of which are excellent. I have also had the Salmon, which again is excellent ...
They may not have an extensive menu, but I recommend this place hands down.
