Gentleman Jim's Pizza No Longer Unique written by

GJ's is a direct descendant of the Cavalier Resaurant at 14th & Oak, NW in DC. This was my first favorite pizza over 50 years ago. This morphed in GJ's on Veirs Mill Rd., then to its present location(s).
With that history in mind, it had been a few years since I had been there. Pizza in our family usually is consumed upon the visit of children and grandchildren from NY, and they seem to always want Ledo's. This time they were open to something different.
We called ahead by 2 hours, but when we arrived on time, the pizza wasn't in the oven yet. The reason was that the printer in the kitchen wasn't working and they hadn't received the order from the counter.
The pizza was the biggest disappointment. It wasn't bad. Almost as good as Ledo's and very similar to Ledo's. But this was not the Cavalier or GJ's pizza of the past. Gone was the thick cheese that left a string from piece to mouth that had to be cut with a knife. The taste and even the smell was different. Which was interesting since the waitress asked if we'd been there before and said that they still called it "Cavlier Pizza"
In summery, not bad pizza. Not quite as good as Ledo's but very similar even to the toppings which include pre-cooked bacon. Fine if you're nearby, but not worth a special trip and certainly disappointing if what you want is the special and unique pizza of yore.

Tired of the same old pizza? GJs is A MUST! Awesome pizza--like no other. Slightly sweet tomato sauce, swiss and mozzerella cheese, and a flaky crust. (Bacon and mushroom or Hawaiian my favorite!) Blows Ledos away! Great sandwiches. Huge menu. Very casual and perfect for kids. A must if not just for the pizza!!! My favorite pizza for 17 years! The service varies. It's not the greatest looking place in the world, but I'm there for the pizza anyway! 1/2 price pizza on Mondays and Tuesdays (dine-in only). Drive-up carry-out around back. Give it a try!!!
