Driving through Danville, my husband and I saw a well-worn, faded sign, "Freddie's Restaurant". In a "what-the-heck" moment, we parked and tried it out. Wonderful decision! This is some of the best italian food around. The house vinegrette is exquisite. The homemade bread is full of textures and flavors. The portions are ample. While we were there, we saw people being turned away for lack of room - this gem is no secret to locals. I had the chicken alfredo - a plate full of penne pasta topped with a sliced chicken breast which had been dredged in some wonderful seasoning and nestled atop the pasta with a creamy, flavorful alfredo sauce (not thick and heavy like most). Blanched broccoli added color to the plate. My hubby had the spaghetti with meat sauce. Italian sausage in a wonderfully flavor-filled sauce atop al dente pasta. We usually talk all thorugh our meal - not this first trip to Freddie's! The food was that good. Decent wine selection for a small place. The tiramusu was nice, but couldn't compare to the main course. The place is usually busy (especially when there's a show at Norton's Center for the Arts), so reservations are a good idea. Now, how's this for prices: approximately $17 total for the spaghetti and chicken alfredo (which includes the salad and bread)! Wine is about $5 a glass; desserts around $4.
