Alfredo's is a surprise for first-time diners, but a treasure for those of us who return again and again. It's in a tacky-looking block of a building next to a highway department compound on a street that has a mix of fine restaurants, antique stores, nurseries, and "girlie clubs." But once you go inside, it's wonderful. It's dark, candle-lit, with Frank Sinatra or Opera music playing in the background... you almost expect to see Tony Soprano there. The food is consistently good... some of the best Italian I've had anywhere. The menu is extensive. The pasta, seafood and veal are recommended as are the salads and desserts. There's a good wine list, a full bar, adult waiters who have been there for years and years, tables or cozy booths with cloth napkins and heavy silverware, and it's usually full of happy diners. It's a good date place or special occasion place. Leave the kids at home unless they are very well behaved. Reservations are recommended, but I have no reservations about recommending Alfredo's.
