Please, this is to someone who cares about people, service, and their business name:
Today, October 27, I went to pick up my mother to treat her to breakfast and shopping before going to a birthday party. But, shortly the day was ruined.
We went to the Village Inn on the Appalachee Parkway in Tallahassee, Florida.
We waited 15 to 20 minutes for a table. Then we were seated.
When the waiter asked what we would like to drink. I asked what kind of hot tea he served. He said I don't know, but it is in a package. I said I know that, but what kind. He didn't know. So I said just water. My mother ordered just water too. He brought the water. Then took our order.
(He brought the food for the table behind us, and promptly dumped one plate upside down on the table.)
Twenty minutes after he took our order he brought food to our table. My order wasn't correct. I had ordered grits. I received potatoes. When I said that was not my order and what was wrong. The waiter says, well do you want the grits. I said that is what I ordered, yes. So he leaves.
I check my toast and eggs, they were both cold to the touch. My mothers pancakes were cold too. When he comes back 5 minutes later, (yes, it was 5 minutes) the grits was a mess and running clobs over the side. I said is that the way you serve grits looking like that. He says well sometimes that happens.
We asked for butter. He didn't come back. So my mother went to find the waiter. She found him up talking to the manager. The waiter looked like he was going to hand the butter to my mother, she made no move to take it - knowing it was his responsibility to get it to the table. He finally brought the butter.
Meanwhile my mother's pancakes were getting colder. My food was getting colder, waiting. I asked for the manager. After 15 minutes, no manager. My mother went up front and the (turned out to be the assistant manager) said he wasn't coming back there and he hadn't heard about it. she told him about the problem.
When my mother got back to the table and told me about the assistant manager and he wasn't coming. I went up there, I said you mean you have an unhappy customer and you are not coming to see to the problem. He said the first he heard of it was when the other lady came up there. And I said and you still haven't come back there knowing there was a problem. He said, No, he wasn't leaving the front door, but he would give me 10% off. I said 10% and your not coming to see what the problem is. I told him you don't do that. You go immediately to see what the problem is and fix the problem. He told me he had been in the restrurant business for 20 years. I told him I have been in the resturanat business for 40 years and I have never seen this kind of service nor a manager not going when there is an unhappy customer. He said the best I can do is give you fifty % off. I turned around saying I wonder what the newspaper would say to this.
I got back to the table and told my mother no he wasn't coming. I told my mother that the best he would do is give 50% off, so I quess we have to eat what we have.
I picked up the messy bowl of grits and used the spoon to try to get it out of the bowl then put it back on the table...could have been a little hard. Then I layed the spoon down on my plate...no I DID NOT slam it down. The manager then was at my elbow saying if I didn't stop slamming his dishes around and talking so loud he would have to ask me to leave.
We talked for a while. Including me telling him to get off my cane. I use a cane, because of health problems...he was lending on it. During the conversation he said I could leave and not eat the food and he wouldn't charge me for it. I explained I came in to eat, because I have to eat in the mornings or I become sick and then we have had nothing but problems and we had already been there an hour. Was I to leave and still have nothing to eat? No answer from him. during the conversation he repeated that he hadn't hear about it again. I said sounds like you have an employee problem then. He said he would speak to him about it. My mother told him she had been in the resturant business most all her life (my parents have owned several resturants and managed serveral resturants.) That if there is ever a problem you go immediately and fix the problem. I asked for his boss' name and his name. He went back up front.
We ate the cold food as it was, what was I to do pay for it and not have anything for it. My mother who is diabetic only ate 1/2 of it, she was so upset.
When we went to the front to pay for the food, the assistant manager saw us and came over and told the cashier he would do it. He ended up not charging us for the meal. I did tell him that this was the worst we have ever seen in service and his attitude. Then I said I asked for your manager's name and yours. He handed me a card. I said I also asked for your name. He said Paul. We left.
It was NOT our intend to have a free meal. We wanted/needed to eat. We wanted a hot meal, nicely prepared, and served in a reasonable time.
What is this world coming to? To have this kind of service and the assistant manager doesn't even care. He never even said he was sorry. This just isn't right.
I can't believe you want your name on this kind of place, losey service, and they don't even care.
