During our recent vacation to Oceanside, CA my wife and I have been on a “hooked” on seafood. We dine out often and like to try new places. On this dining occasion we decided to try an old favorite “Red Lobster”. We arrived around 6:30pm on a Wednesday evening; the wait was a reasonable 20 minutes. We waited in the bar area where thee were a few smokers, the draft beer we ordered was very good although a little high priced at nearly $5 a glass.
The dining room was quiet and well lit but not bright, very nice for intimate conversation.
Service was excellent and understated.
The dinner salad was very boring, something like you might find at a fast food take out. The dressing was just as boring with Blue Cheese dressing that lacked any chunks of blue cheese and could easily have come right out of a bottle purchased at a local food store. This is an area that could be improved.
The main course was adequate. The potato was excellent and just the right size, not too big and prepared well. The coconut shrimp (our newly acquired baseline for seafood) was fried in a heavy batter and somewhat over fried. The taste was adequate, but the fried batter overwhelmed the taste of the shrimp. Red Lobster could take a lesson from the coconut shrimp prepared at Joe’s Crab Shack. The fish was prepared well, but nothing exceptional.
The cost was reasonable just under $50 (including drinks).
This Red Lobster is on our C list, if we want quiet dining with friends this would be an option if seafood heads the list. But if we want excellent seafood we’d go to Joe’s Crab Shack; but don’t expect quiet dining at Joe’s. Joe’s is bright and loud, but the food is better.
