Montenia's is an experience! Feel good music and feel real good food. The food is not simply southern, it is GOURMET to the senses and made to order from scratch. It was like paradise on our palette. She was so attentive and personable that we made a reservation to come back with family and friends a whole month in advance for latin jazz Sunday! Price for latin jazz night? $15 for the night's featured menu item plus tips and drinks. I also plan to have a business lunch frequently since her lunch menu is only $7! An absolute MUST have: MANGO MARTINI made with real mango.
Montenia's restaurant was evening for the senses. The combination of good music and food made for a pleasureable evening. I had the catfish which was lightly coated and seasoned to perfection. The portion was huge and served over a nice garlic rice with a mixed green salad with a tangy vinagrette. My partner had the ribs. The meat fell off the bone and melted in your mouth. Our friend had the gumbo and she enjoyed it completely. We were stomped by a sweet fresh seasoning and Montenia would not give it up. I think it was cardamon. The piano playing was an excellent side dish to the meal and company and Montenia's singing was the icing for the chocolate pecan pie! We all plan to try out one of the Sunday dinners soon
This is a very friendly, warm, environment. Get ready to have the best fall off the bone ribs with toe tapping Jazz in the background. Montenia herself is fun to chat with. She makes you feel like you're part of the family. There aren't too many places where I would want to get to know the owner of the restaurant, but when she sits down it completes the meal. Don't forget the sweet potato pie!

I knew Montenia long ago. She is one of the best people in the world! I am delighted she has her own place and know that ANYTHING she touches is the 100% best! She sings like and angel and has a heart of gold.
God bless you my friend. We love you!

The sign out front says "Creative Comfort Food" and that's an apt description. The ribs were coated with a spice rub and perfectly cooked to come off the bone easily while still retaining some toothiness. They came with sides of mac and cheese and corn and lima beans with corn bread. The gumbo was served in a bowl and had lots of shrimp, scallops and sausage in a deep brown roux based sauce. Shrimp were shrimpy and obviously home breaded. They came with and herbed saffron rice side. We ordered the house merlot wine, which was very nice and came in a large seving in a very pretty huge "balloon" glass. Nice jazz was played as background music when we were there. The restaurant is attractively decorated. It is located in the heart of downtown right near the Mass Mutual Center . The owner, Montenia, had time to chat with us and tell us about a special Gospel singing night that is held on the first Sunday evening of every month. We'll be back for that!
I went to the Grand Opening last night and had the time of my life. My friend invited me last minute and I am so glad that she did. The shrimp was incredible, and I actually got to meet the owner! What a wonderful woman. I can't recommend this restaurant enough.
I went to and was so pleased, she actually sang for us! It was a great time. The gumbo was great and the greek salad was huge. The staff was very friendly, such a cute place. You should really go and check it out, also try the chocolate chip pecan pie, it's so good.
Awesome. Really good soul food (ribs, chicken and rice, etc.). Heaping portions, reasonably priced, attentive & friendly staff. And live jazz played by notable area musicians on weekends. Montenia Shider, the owner, is also a fantastic singer in the mold of Ella Fitzgerald and Carmen McRae. If you're lucky, she may be convinced to leave the kitchen for a minute and sing some tunes with the band.
