I LOVE Mandalay. Definitely one of the most unique restaurants in Bloomington. Everything I've tried has been delicious. My recommendation is the Curry Chicken with Coconut Rice. And as an appetizer the samosas and the mandalay fritters are excellent. I am also addicted to the Jackfruit shake, which is mildly sweet and fruity.
its a great restaurant! i love the food even i was not that hungry when i dined in. the (white/fired) rice (best ever), shake and dish are awesome!!! the flavor is every special. service is good. the only suggestion is that the portion is relatively not that large and price is little high. anyway ill definitely have dinner there again!
I love this restaurant. Not for the tacky fake lit-up palm tree in front of it, but because of the delicious, fresh, and new tastes that it offers. The red curry, scrumptious pastry-like flat bread, and the caramelized onions with yellow beans are HEAVENLY! Its fun to go and find out what sort of new dishes they've come up with based on their farmer's market finds for the week. I feel so lucky to live in this town!
Having travelled extensively throughout East and Southeast Asia (including Myanmar, formerly Burma) and having been lucky enough to enjoy ethnic and regional foods in many major cities throughout the US; Mandalay is a real treasure for such a small town.
Mandalay's Burmese cuisine is every bit as fresh, aromatic, and satiating to the palate as the food i had while traveling in Myanmar. For something friendly to the "faint of heart" try the Chicken Curry with Coconut rice from the specials menu. the slightly acidic tomato based curry with aromatic curry leaves pair wonderfully with the soft, rich, and subtley sweet flavor of coconut rice. For the braver "foodys" the Pork Curry with Mango Pickle is awesome! my personal favorite. succulent, rich, and complex, the pickle gives a subtle flavor and makes this dish so much more interesting than your "ordinary curry". For a REAL Burmese experience, try the Green tea leaf salad as an appetizer. Fresh Green Tea is steamed salted and pickled in bamboo poles to form a very subtle and wonderful product that tastes similar to hardy dark greens but with a slightly acidic pickle quality. Trust me, its great. The "pickled" tea leaves are then mixed with chopped tomatoes, garlic, chilies, crispy fried shallots, peanuts, and some peanut oil. The exotic green tea leaf salad is wonderful on its own with rice, or mixed with thinly sliced cabbage for a lighter option. The Avocado Shake and Burmese Sweet Tea (called Lepay i cho) are really great and worth a try for even the most frieghtened first timers...
If you want to get a feel for Burmese cuisine, you have to eat it! So PLEASE! don't get chicken fried rice, or chicken fried noodles, sweet and sour whatever or things like that... though they may also have it on the menu, and though they do taste good, i think its only as a courtesy to those who are petrified by foods more foreign than Pot roast and PB&J's... so live on the edge! try something new and different. you'll be happy to did...
I was mortified by the food and service at Mandalay. The service was really poor, and the food was worse...it actually turned my stomach. I took one bite of my noodles and chicken and put it to the edge of the table to be taken away. My husband and daughter and I are usually up for an unusual culinary adventure, but this one was not one we'll be taking again. I will say the samosas were really good...we ate ALL of those!
We were skeptical the first time we went to this little place, (which is actually called Mandalay) but we were floored by how delicious the food is! I'm vegetarian and my friends are carnivores, and we were all very happy! I had the yellow bean curry, which was excellently flavored with sauted onions, and one of my friends had the house specialty--which is a sort of pastry, phyllo dough pancake/naan which he scooped up his red chicken curry with. YUMMY! And the waiter was so nice! We love this place!
