Dusty's Cellar is a good place to go for a "nice" dinner in the Lansing/East Lansing/Okemos area. The low-lighting, quiet atmosphere, and candles on the tables were a nice change from busy chain restaurants. I ordered the Guava Honey Duckling, which came with risotto and seasonal vegetables. The side dishes were disappointing, as the risotto was bland and mushy, and the vegetables (Brussels Sprouts and shredded carrots) had a bland flavor as well. But there was a generous portion of duck, which was tender and juicy, and the sweet honey sauce was tasty and enjoyable. My friends enjoyed the whole stuffed lobster and seasoned breaded chicken. We also ordered a cheese plate, which included generous portions of 3 different cheeses, as well as cashews, dried cranberries, and crackers.
Dusty's has a huge selection of wines to accompany any meal. They even have "flights" so you can try a variety of drinks while you are there (we enjoyed one of the whiskey flights).
For dessert, I couldn't decide among the creme brulee, key lime pie, or lemon custard. Finally I decided on the creme brulee, which was rich and creamy with a thin, hard crust on top. My friend enjoyed the tiramisu. At the end of our meal, we were also served 3 small chocolate brownies!
The service at Dusty's was friendly and attentive. We never had to wait to get our drinks refilled or to order our next course. I would definitely go back to Dusty's Cellar, and I would recommend Dusty's to my friends.
Dusty's is one of the few restaurants in the Lansing area which is not a chain and which offers a first class culinary experience. The seafood pasta is delicious, as is the acorn squash soup. The menu offers entrees which range in price from pizza in the $10.00 range to rack of lamb in the $25.00 range. The atmosphere is cozy and the service is always fast and friendly. Highly recommended
My girlfriend and I visited this restaurant for our anniversary. We'd heard good things about it (more specifically the chef, who was professionally trained). The first thing we noticed was the lack of a hostess/maitre d', which I found slightly disconcerting. The seeming upscale entrance clashed with the casual approach to service, which I'm sure would be tolerable for a work-related meeting or lunch, but was not enjoyable for such a special occasion. When we finally got our food, we were satisfied with the results. It was prepared quite well, and the presentation was sufficient, but anyone who has been to a good restaurant would know that it was lacking that extra "oomph" that makes good food stand out. In the end, we found that the exorbitant price paid for the food was not justified by the taste. I probably would not eat here again. It is a good place for someone new to fine dining to get their feet wet, but after you have experienced a place that gets it right, you will feel slighted.
My experience at this restaurant was wonderful. I had smoked turkey in brioche dough which was absolutely delicious and beautifully presented. I highly recommend the spinach salad, and the rolls served with dinner are amazing. Instead of a mint, they bring you a small square of a brownie. Amazing. The service was pretty well except we had to ask for our drinks to be refilled and they were a little slow to the task. The atmosphere and ambiance were lovely. The only thing detracting was the tables were very close together, so I was uncomfortable being so close to other parties. Overall, the experience was wonderful and I will definitely return.
