A native of Chicago, (born and raised,)I've been full-time "on the road" RVing for 3½ years.
Let me tell you, it is just awful to live without Italian Beef Sandwiches, Pizza Puffs and Vienna Beef Hot Dogs. You can get them on virtually every street corner in Chicago. But outside of the Chicagoland area, well...not so much.
Imagine my surprise, while staying at an RV park in Mission, TX when I saw a menu on the local dining bulletin board that listed "Chicago-Style Italian Sandwiches" and "Chicago's Vienna Beef Hot Dogs"! I crossed my fingers when I went in. Then I saw the day's special - "Pizza Puffs!" (I thought, "NOW I don't have to stuff my luggage full with these foods the next time I visit my folks!!!")
The owner was born and raised in Chicago. Good!
Still, (I thought back to the alleged "Chicago pizza" I ordered near Tampa, FL), that doesn't REALLY mean anything. So, I ordered, "an Italian Beef, Sweet, Juicy" and I received an Italian Beef, with sweet bell peppers and my juicy in a cup on the side.
OH! It was soooooo good!
So I ordered a regular Chicago-style Vienna Beef hot dog and an order of pizza puffs. (Pizza puffs had the same flavor as I remembered - but not the same texture. That is actually a good thing. You could actually see the individual ingredients instead of a pureèd mess!)
Needless to say, I was stuffed completely and completely satisfied. However, that did not stop my husband and me from eating at Doggies' Hot Dogs 3-5 times a week during our 6 month stay in the Rio Grande Valley! In fact, I can't wait to get back again next year.
I've eaten nearly everything on the menu at least once. Everything, and I mean EVERYTHING that I've consumed was excellent! Although, a couple things were a little too hot for me - burritos sinchronizados, ranch hot dog's green sauce and the enchiladas. (My heat index, however, on peppers is only jalepeños WITHOUT seeds. I'm a lightweight! I had no idea that green sauce wasn't a mild sauce but something which burns! I know now!)
Anyways, it is my hope, (my dream even,) that one day, there will be a Doggies' Hot Dogs in every state I travel to, back and forth, across I-10.
A girl can dream can't she?
