I've been patronizing this restaurant for 26 years. At one point, I ate there almost daily while for months while my kitchen was being renovated. However, the owner, Alex, has never exhibited the slightest bit of friendliness or recognition.Maybe because I'm 10-20 years younger than the average patron? I didn't see him today, when my husband and I had lunch. Anyway, the food is good, with a homemade quality, although it often arrives at the table lukewarm. I love the apple crisp! Breakfast, lunch and dinner, the menu is varied. Their Diet Coke is the worst and this never seems to change. Soda in cans would be a huge improvement. The changing cast of servers is invariably friendly, kind and helpful.
I have never had quite the the takeout service as I had at the gables. Other restaurants can boast about their car side service but nothings compares to some good old fashioned face to face conversation. The hostess, I believe her name was Julie, was a sheer delight. She was on the ball, prompt, genial, and had helpful recommendations as well as providing all the neccessary condiments. Basically she hit all the right notes and made a bland takeout pickup an experience. When returning home the food was still warm and well packed. Way to go gables. The employees are one of your greatest assets.
How should I start, this resturant is spectacular! I had the pork chops with potato which the most pricy item on the menu but worth it 100%. The service is fantastice and super fast. The waiter we had was so nice and was there when we needed anything! This it is a family resturant and not a chain which is pretty cool. I will surly be back to try some of the other tasty food. If you are looking for a casual nice kind of your resturant visit the Coral Gables it's the best resturant in town!!

for once a place that makes stuff from scratch and doesnt cost a ton, the pie is spectacular!!! so many to choose from and made daily and they actually make their soups and other dishes. menu is pretty simple but they have daily specials that are often very delicious! the small greek section on the menu is also great!
We were promptly seated. (party of 2)
The waiter came right over and said his name was Brad.
The waiter then got our water, juice and took our order.
The food came and it was burn your mouth hot.
Food was very good.
We will be back, after all breakfast is the most important meal!
Not fancy, but comfortable with tasty food and attentive service. Alex Vanis and his son, Stuart, have kept alive an East Lansing tradition since buying the restaurant in 1968. Their menu ranges from burgers and pizza (IMHO, the best in town) to whitefish and seared tuna (my own favorite), with a fair representation of good Greek fare. Best of all, if you like live jazz, the Gables on Saturday night is the place to be.
