I took my girlfriend to Clusters & Hops for our 1 year anniversary after my wine-connoisseur of a friend told me about it. We were open to trying new cuisine and new atmosphere. The place is a gem (tucked away, next to the Prince Hotel, just south of where Thomasville Road meets Monroe). When you enter the place, you immediately walk into what appears to be a wine (& wine accessories) vendor, but it's what's on the other end of the isles that impressed us the most. There was a bar with a few drafts on tap as well as high and low top tables to dine. We chose the high table in the dark corner of this nook of a restaurant where a solitary candle stay lit. The atmosphere was great (quiet) for intimate 1-on-1 conversation while the server was "out-of-this-world" educated on the menu. From the food to the wines, he knew everything about everything cuisine-wise. So if you're not wine and cheese savvy- don't worry, they are courteous and don't mind helping. My wino friend suggested the cheese plate, which was rediculously delicious. Again, the garcon described everything on the plate and how to sample it for the full experince. We agreed on a bottle of champagne for the occasion, which the waiter took us to the fridge and explained all the selections available. For dinner, I had the pork and I can't remember what she had, cause the dish was THAT GOOD. All I remember was that the dish was very good on it's own, but the sauces that decorated the outer rim of the plate were just too much to handle. In summary, the food was excellent. I've never had so much help in creating the perfect celebratory evening. All in all, the cheese appetizer, champagne and 2 dinners ran somewhere around $100 + $20 tip, so don't forget your pocketbook, cause I'm sure that would ruin the date.
