I have been a devotee of Indiana cuisine for many years. I measure all other Indian restaurants to Amar India in Dayton, Ohio. My girlfriend and I live in Bloomington, Indiana, and we travel all the way to spend a weekend in Dayton just to eat at Amar, though we live in a city with two Indian restaurants. On our latest visit we had a small shock when the establishment was gone from its old location only to be moved across the street into a swank new location in the strip mall directly behind. The decor is so comfortable and well done. It is apparent they are doing well, because it is a far cry from the old business. The food, however, is still as amazing as it always has been. The spices are hot, but the food just explodes with flavor. My usual meal starts with an appetizer of Palak Pakora, a fried Spinach dish, or the Vegetable Samosas. Next the Entree is almost always the Chicken Tikka Saag, which is served with a hearty amount of rice to blend with the thick, rich Saag and the spicy Tikka chicken. As a side my partner and I get Aloo Nan, a potato bread that's perfectly executed. To drink, the Mango Lassi is superb. Amar India is well worth the trip from any location within 200 miles. There isn't an Indian establishment that can touch it. The service is prompt and friendly, the new place is gorgeous, and the price is fair ($55 for two, and that's a HUGE meal).
