The food here is great, i have ate at almost every sushi bar located in lansing and the surrounding areas. The price is comparable to most sushi restarants, but I feel the order sizes are larger. I always get adamame as an appetizer which if you never had it I highly recommend.
I'm very curious about the bad reviews...makes me wonder if there's been a change in management. We've been to Ai Fusion several times over the last few months and the food and service have been consistently excellent. The last couple of times we've gone, we've sat at the bar, and the chefs have been very friendly...in fact, last night they let us try a new roll for free (it was wonderful!) Both the basic rolls and the specialty rolls have been great--fresh, creative, different from what we usually run across, visually beautiful, and great flavor combinations. We get sushi at least once every couple of weeks, and this restaurant is our favorite.
It was 8 months ago when I had my first and last try at Ai Fusion Sushi and Grill and I still feel revolted. Nonetheless, I want to share my experience so that others won't have to go through what I had.
I love to try out new restaurants. When a colleague mentioned Ai Fusion to me in Jan., I took my family there on Friday night, Feb. 1. We got there around 6:30pm. The receptionist was on the phone and managed to ignore us for quite sometime. We thought the place must be full. When someone else came and seated us, we noticed that the place was about a third full. The ambiance could be called chic or trendy if darkness is what they strive for. Since we are interested in food more than the decor, the colorful menu grabbed our attention quickly. After the usual appetizers and kids' meals, my husband and I each ordered some specialty rolls. From the picture on the menu, mine would have fresh lobster tail rolling with other goodies. The price next to the label marked as $25 or so, but I thought since I never had lobster tail rolls (although plenty of fresh lobster) before, I'd give it a try. I asked the waitress how many pieces there would be in each order, she said between 8-10. She also went to the kitchen and confirmed that those would be real lobster tails. Sounded reasonable. A little while later, she brought our appetizers and kids' meal. Then she put down a plate of sushi rolls in front of my husband without a word. After a while when there was no sign of my lobster rolls, I asked her. Much to our shock, she pointed to my husband's (half empty) plate saying that my order was on his plate!! REALLY?! First of all, if his plate had both of our orders, why didn't she put in the middle of the table?! Second, if that plate was accountable for two specialty orders, shouldn't there be more pieces?! For all we could see, it had about 10 pieces--as we expected that his would have. None of the 10 pieces looked like having my lobster tail. When I asked for help to identify pieces in my order, she pointed to a piece that was marginally bigger than others, which may have two more siblings on that plate. I took a bite, and there was no lobster tail, nor was there ANY lobster molecule. It was the fake crabmeat. No need to say I was a bit upset by now. And I tried to get the attention from a woman in the dining hall who looked like the owner or manager, with no luck. We didn't want to make a fuss and paid our bill (my mistake!) and exited. On my way out, I stopped the owner at the reception desk and asked for the menu. When I pointed to the item on the menu and explained that was not what I got, she said, "No, this is NOT what you would have. This order only has three pieces. Your waitress should have told you that." Yeah, she definitely should have, especially when I asked how many pieces I'd expect, she should not misinform me with 8. Then again "Why do you put it on the menu if this is NOT what you'd serve?" I asked. To which, she didn't think THERE WAS ANYTHING WRONG WITH IT!!! To which, she insisted it was our waitress' fault and the restaurant had no fault in it. Therefore no apology from her, nevertheless any gesture of compensation. I bluntly told her this was a dirty rip-off. Had I know there would be only 3 pieces in my $25 order, no matter what they put in it, I wouldn't order it. I particularly would not order anything with the fake crabmeat. When I mentioned that her, she insisted that those were real lobster meat. Really?! You mean the whitish chunks with the most fake pink/red shreds aligning tidily in the only artificial way possible and tasted nothing near the ocean?! You called that lobster?! Frankly, this was the most dishonest restaurant I had ever been to and the most repulsive management I experienced. I am also very sad to know that Ukai is connected to it, since we do like Ukai (or were we lucky that we had an excellent waitress that day?!).
In any case, I'm glad we still have Omi, Sansu and Q Sushi. At least they haven't tried to fool customers with fake crabmeat at the lobster price without realizing how unethical that was.
Ai fusion is a great restaurant. the wait staff was extremely kind and very attentive. the food was delicious we shared the teppanyanki and tried a few rolls. it was really good. The restaurant ended up being a great experience overall. i would definately return to that restaurant, i would suggest getting some tempura ice cream for dessert!
My co-worker and I were so excited when they opened so close to our work. We ordered carry out at least once a week. On one order the food made me very ill. After some persasion she convinced me to give them one more try. I agreed and she went to get the food. While she waited, two of the waite staff kept looking at her uniform and laughing, when she confronted them they got even worse with her and insulted her, things got worse from there. She demanded to talk to the owner (whom we have both held conversasions with before while waiting for food) he was out of town so his mother (manager) came out. One of the waitress started Screaming at her in Japenese.
When she called the owner when he was back in town, he said he talked to his staff and "Just didn't believe it". Well that's funny since his own mother was there and comped the food. I will Never recommond them nor eat there again. If you want great food and service, go with Q sushi!
If you want to try the best sushi they have, make sure to go during busier times - I think they have their best sushi chefs working Friday & Saturday nights. I've gone during the day and it's not as good...but if you go on a Friday night, the sushi is quite good. it's a really neat place, the wait staff is very friendly also!
Went there last night (3/21/2008). My girlfriend and I each got a drink, two appetizers (edamame and fried crap), we had the Alaskan roll which is the best sushi I have ever had in my life, then we split an entree (fillet mignon and shrimp) which came with soup and salad for the both of us, finally, we split a desert which was butter finger cream pie. All that was only $41 dollars. Their sushi menu was the largest selection I have ever seen and their prices are cheap. I am confident in saying that this is not just the best sushi/Japanese restaurant I have been to, but It is the best place ever.
It gets better, the decor in the place would make you think that this was a bank breaking restaurant. And the elegance is their with the fountains, sushi bar, open air kitchen, private "authentic" rooms where you sit on the floor at a little table. but the prices are so great.
THIS joint is new and is owned and operated by the same folks that own/run Ukai. From what I can tell, the menu is larger, the food is better, and although Ai doesn't have the hibachi grill like Ukai, it is still a better deal any day.
I could go on, but you would be wasting time reading this instead of driving there to eat. If I am wrong about any of this, comment on here, but trust me, you wont be disappointed.
